Citylicious goes Belly Dancing at the new look Souq Restaurant!

Souq Restaurant on South Clerk Street in Edinburgh has recently had a facelift. No longer a café and shop, now a 110 cover restaurant, serving some delicious Moroccan cuisine and offering some fabulous entertainment at the same time. We were there last Saturday to check it out.

The first thing you notice when you walk through the doors of the new look Souq, is the elaborate décor. The walls adorned with Moroccan tapestry and hanging lamps as far as the eye can see! The colours are simply amazing, and I have to say, the restaurant looks stunning.

We arrived around 8pm so as not to miss the entertainment. A Belly Dancer! Belly Dancer Natalie was performing and having never seen a belly dancer before, I was really looking forward to it. We took our seats and ordered our food just in time for the show to start.

I have to say, Natalie was brilliant. She did 3 sets that included a veil, finger cymbals and of course the obligatory getting some of the diners up to give it a shake too. Not me I must add. I’m not much of a dancer! Fair play to those that got involved though, they really gave it a go and you could tell by the smiles and laughter, that they really enjoyed it. Natalie will be there again on Saturday and then will be rotating with another 2 dancers every Saturday night.

As we sat and enjoyed the entertainment, our food arrived in stages. Starting off with some traditional mezze and followed by a wonderful tagine. This is what we ate…

Kubba Halab - Minced lamb patties with sultanas

Cheese Borek, finger shaped pastries filled with mozzarella cheese & parsley

Fried halloumi cheese sticks drizzled with pomegranate molasses

Dolma marinated vine leaves, stuffed with fragrant rice

Fatoush Salad with red peppers, olives,

Moroccan Tagine with Chicken. Delicious slow cooked boneless chicken with aromatic spices and olives

I have to say, the Kubba Halab was my favourite, I could eat that every day of the week! The food is great. Colourful, indulgent and delicious. The mezze is the perfect food to enjoy while watching the dancing, and the tagine is the perfect follow up to enjoy as the evening continues.

I plan on going back again on Saturday as it is genuinely a fun and relaxing evening. If you are looking for something different and fun to do, then Souq is the perfect way to enjoy a Saturday night. The staff are genuinely lovely, the décor is gorgeous, the food is delicious, and the dancing is simply wow! We had a fantastic night and cannot wait to go back!
